Recreation Options Keep Residents Feeling Fit

It’s easy to see why studies have shown that Colorado is the nation’s fittest state.
This is a place where participatory sports and recreation are a way of life. Miles of trails and numerous parks, ball fields, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, skating rinks and other facilities – combined with a generally mild and dry climate – encourage outdoor activities and exercise regimens.
That’s especially true in the Metro North Region.
“In Westminster alone, there are 90 miles of trails, 55 developed parks and six recreation centers,” says Bill Walenczak, director of Westminster Parks, Recreation and Libraries. “The city also owns Standley Lake Regional Park, which offers waterskiing, motor boating and an extensive hiking trail system.”
To further illustrate its commitment to fitness, Westminster won the 2004 National Recreation and Park Association’s Healthy Community Award, which recognized the city for its many residents who take advantage of recreation programs. The award also acknowledged the abundance of fitness attractions that Westminster has to offer.
“For example, we have a trail that stretches 12 miles along Big Dry Creek, and we have indoor facilities like City Park Fitness Center that features a variety of cardiovascular and circuit training machines,” Walenczak says. “For figure skaters, the Sun Microsystems Ice Centre is the largest facility of its kind in the Rocky Mountain Region.”
The cities of Westminster and Broomfield also have joined together to acquire Metzger Farm, a 152-acre open space that will operate as a historic farm with public trails.
“The property has two ponds and abundant wildlife, plus it features portions of Big Dry Creek and the Big Dry Creek Trail,” Walenczak says. “It will eventually become another excellent fitness destination for the people of Westminster, Broomfield and the entire Metro North Region.”
