Picturesque Courses Attract Numerous Golfers
Published Nov 19, 2008

The rolling fairways of Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton challenge golfers.
With golden prairie grasses waving against a Rocky Mountain backdrop, golfers could be commended for simply keeping their eyes on the ball.
But those who play Metro North courses say scenic beauty is just one reason for the area’s reputation as a superior golfing destination.
“There have been just a tremendous number of quality golf courses built,” says Ken Watson, regional parks and golf manager for the city of Westminster.
Among them is Hyland Hills, named one of Colorado’s top courses by Golf Digest. The magazine awarded the 18-hole regulation course a coveted 4 Star rating. Hyland Hills also offers three par-3 courses, for a total of 45 holes.
At Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, golfers play along generous fairways surrounded by roughs filled with native grasses. “It almost looks like wheat, especially in late summer,” says Herb Moore, director of golf at the semiprivate facility that opened in spring 2007. “Arthur Hills designed the course, and he did a very good job. The course is fun to play. There’s not a great deal of elevation change, but there is some.”
Unlike the loop at Hyland Hills, Heritage Todd Creek runs a singular route that is 7,435 yards long, which maximizes frontage for homes being developed along its perimeter.
Built as part of an active senior community, Heritage Todd Creek also offers a dining room and banquet space that are open to the public, says Wendy Stone, director of sales.
Two public courses operated by the city of Westminster are considered among the top 10 in the state, and both are popular with golfers from throughout the region, Watson says.
“Legacy Ridge and the Heritage Golf Course at Westmoor are championship-quality, full-amenity courses, with 18 holes, driving ranges, practice facilities, a full-service restaurant and snack bar,” Watson says.
“Across the nation, golf rounds have been declining,” he notes, “but we’ve increased our revenue the last three years in a row.”
