On Your Mark, Get Set…Get Fit

The 5K Run/Walk is held in partnership with North Suburban Medical Center.
The Metro North Chamber has added a whole new meaning to the phrase “running a business.” That’s because of its annual Chamber Challenge 5K Run/Walk, launched in 2006 in partnership with North Suburban Medical Center.
Chamber President and CEO Deborah Obermeyer says the event is “a way to help promote better corporate health and wellness” and build “a sense of community amongst our members.”
Challenge participants compete as individuals or as members of corporate teams. Several prizes are awarded, and all runners and walkers go home with a goody bag stuffed with gifts and promotions from fellow chamber members.
At the third annual event in September 2008, held on the back nine of the Thorncreek Golf Course in Thornton, a food drive was added to benefit local food banks.
Thorncreek offers “picturesque views of the mountains and a built-in trail that can challenge the best of runners,” Obermeyer says. “While the trail itself is stunning, the clubhouse is an even more amazing location to have the best after-party around.” Patios on each side of the clubhouse are venues for multiple food vendors and a live band. “There has even been room for a massage tent,” she adds.
Because the Chamber Challenge is only three years old, members of the chamber staff have been too busy ensuring smooth operations to field their own team. “Rest assured though, we will be competing soon, and our challenge will be first class – or we will just recruit the winners and sign them up as ringers,” she quips.
